Face slap!

One of the most powerful things a mentor ever said to me was “your business isn’t about you.”  Ouch! At the time it felt like a sharp slap in the face, but she was right. While tough to hear, it changed my life and business forever. That’s what good mentors do if we’re willing to put our defenses down and listen. I’ve been the CEO of my own successful business for twelve years now, when most business owners barely make it to five. But if I were to get real about it, for half that time, I wasn’t operating as...

They found me out

I KNOW you’ve heard of Impostor Syndrome. You’re bopping along feeling great, maybe you have a new offering coming out, or you get invited to speak on a TV show, and BAM, it hits you. This deep fear that somehow people will “find out” you’re “not that great,” and EVERYONE will know it.   The problem with Impostor Syndrome is how dangerous it can be to your purpose. I once spoke with a woman who had the most amazing story to tell. She’d been wanting to write a book about it for years, had the right publisher who was interested, and...

Offensive bathroom break

You’ll often hear people talk about “scarcity mentality” and “abundance mentality.” I know you’ve read and internalized all the usual signs of “scarcity mentality,” so I won’t repeat what you already know.  But there’s one sneaky way scarcity mentality comes up, even in the person most convinced they’re “abundantly minded.” When I’ve pointed it out to clients, they’re floored because of how true it rings (after they get over being triggered by it.) Want to know what it is? Read on. “Daniella” was one of my premium-level clients. In my most high-end coaching package and with a business pulling in...

Resisting?

Many years ago I worked with a woman who’d just written a book. She had an incredible personal story to tell and even her publishers knew it was going to blow the F up when it was released. “Marguerite” had one problem though...  She kept holding back the book launch. First, it was another round of edits. Then, it was endlessly nitpicking the cover. Another time she avoided responding to the publisher’s emails for weeks. She booked a Capacity Intensive with me because she just couldn’t figure out why she was so resistant to putting this book out there, even...

How to say “pay me” when people ask to “pick your brain.”

Have you ever been at a party, dinner, or some other event, and someone finds out what you do professionally - then proceeds to ask a million questions and “pick your brain?” This happens to me all the time, and I’ve devised the perfect response I want to share with you today. Before I do, we need to talk about how you tend to handle this type of request because most people I work with don’t know how.. They fear they’ll come across as “rude” if they say no. It also feels slimy when people ask to pick their brain...

The Real Reason You‘re Not Getting The Results You Want

One of my nephews is obsessed with dinosaurs. When I was visiting him in June, I took him to an arcade to play Jurassic Park. When it was over, we took all the tickets we’d collected to exchange it for a prize. He picked a magic dinosaur egg, of course. There were very specific instructions on the box to get the egg to “hatch” overnight.  But when we got home, he didn’t want to wait. He tried to take a shortcut by peeling the outside layer to make it go faster, then put it in the water. It never hatched....

Visibly Invisible

If I ask you, “what do you do” - do you clam up, fumble over your words, and excuse yourself to the bathroom?  Luckily, you’re not alone if you feel this, because this is very common! I’ve helped thousands of people with this exact issue. In all cases, they believed they could fix it by hiring a messaging strategist. My client “Anita” had done just that. But what happens when you do this and you’re still fumbling or worse, noticing your messaging isn’t bringing in more clients or money? Anita had spent good money on brand and messaging strategists to...

Triggered AF

When I was a kid, my sister and I made up a game called “dress of jewels.” You open your closet, look at a dress, then close it and say  “I wish for a dress of rubies, emeralds, and diamonds!” If you wished hard enough, it would happen. We always convinced ourselves we’d seen a “flash” of the jewels when we opened the closet door again. Our desire to see it made us believe we saw it, even if it wasn’t there. People do this to other people, too. Ever met a person who just didn’t like you, for no...

Burnout-Proof

Want to know what one of the biggest fears you’ll encounter when you’re setting new boundaries? It’s a tricky one! A few months ago I was speaking about boundaries with one of our Capacity Shift™ clients on a group call. She was setting new boundaries she wasn’t used to having, but which she needed for her own emotional and physical health after burning out big time in her business.  Burnout is a real problem that can show up as mystery physical symptoms, emotional exhaustion, physical exhaustion, unexplained resentment, “inexplicable” revenue declines, or myriad other ways.   But most of the ways...

The Worst Imaginable Thing

I was listening to Bob Iger’s book “The Ride of A Lifetime” in my car while I was on vacation recently. The opening was so intense and riveting; I was 30 minutes late to my doctor’s appointment because I lost track of time. Several years back, one of the worst imaginable tragedies that ever happened at Disney happened. A 2-year-old boy was playing at the edge of a lagoon on the Disney resort property he and his family were staying at when an alligator killed him.  It was horrendous. I remember watching it on the news and feeling so devastated...
