power drain

On Sunday, I fired a service provider I’d worked with for almost two years. I liked them as a human being and I greatly enjoyed my work with them. But there was a sneaky thing that kept happening that ultimately made the relationship untenable. It’s also the culprit of one of the biggest complaints I hear from the ambitious people I work with: burnout.  Often the people I work with think the culprit of that burnout is something strategic. Perhaps they should fire their whole team, change their business model, learn better communication skills for work, find a better launch...

bad idea

A personal trainer once told me that for Olympic sprinters, a 30 second sprint requires a prior 90 second rest. For an intense burst of activity, your muscles need three times the amount of rest, so they have the energy reserves to break records. That tidbit of information completely changed the way I viewed achieving goals. Recently I worked with a client who, before we met, had managed to build a very successful business in just a few years time. But here she was, burned out, resentful and at a plateau. The strategies just weren’t working anymore. She had a...

debate trauma

I didn’t watch the US presidential debates a few weeks ago. On purpose. And if you’ve been trying to preserve your mental health during a pandemic and/or you’re recovering your nervous system from trauma, burnout or exhaustion...it's okay if you didn't watch, too. This isn’t about politics. It’s also not about bypassing what’s happening.  Nor is it about turning a blind eye and checking out. The world needs us all paying attention and ready to fight for our fellow humans. You do need to know what’s going on in the world. You do need to inform yourself of the value...

super defensive

A few weeks ago, someone I implicitly trust shared something with me that hurt my feelings. They shared a particular behavior I do when I’m feeling unsure about something is “off-putting”. I’m a Cancer, astrologically speaking, and one of my favorite memes about Cancers is this one: I laugh hysterically whenever I see this meme online, because it’s just PLAIN TRUTH. I’m tough as nails but I’m also a sensitive person. Though I have excellent capacity, I’m aware that my propensity is to get my feelings hurt easily. Which means I need double the capacity to not take things personally...

your resistance is wisdom

For the last few weeks we’ve been exploring one of the top questions I get from so many of you “why am I stuck in this one area, even after I’ve tried everything?”.  I laid out the first two parts of my unique answer to that question in Part 1 and Part 2 already. Today we’re going to wrap this series up in Part 3. A few months ago, I was coaching a client who wanted to raise her coaching price to $25,000. She had actually signed up for and paid $35,000 for another coach’s prestigious program on how to...

why you’re stuck (part two)

Last week I introduced you to Part 1 of the “Why You’re Stuck” series. We talked about how being stuck is a capacity issue and I laid out my case for the first reason why you’re stuck. If you haven’t read it yet, make sure you catch it here. We’re exploring this from an angle I haven’t really seen a lot of people talk about. Today, we’re covering Reason #2 you’re stuck. This one’s verrrryyy sneaky, tricky, and often lays dormant in your subconscious. 2) You’re unconsciously hoping someone’s going to do the work for you. Many years ago, a...

why you’re still stuck

Every year I speak with so many people who feel stuck and like nothing is working to make progress in their goals. I hear you and I get it. In the past I’ve also been in that place many times. I’ve helped so many people through it. It’s why Capacity Work™ exists. But what do you do when you feel you’ve tried a million things and you’re still stuck? Well, there’s a few reasons you could be stuck. And frankly, they’re reasons I don’t see a lot of people talking about. Over the next few emails I’m going to lay...

whoa

As I write this to you it’s a few weeks after leading the “Capacity in Crisis” workshop. It’s been kind of a whirlwind lately (with some really awesome news on the professional front I can’t QUITE share with you yet, but soon I will!).  So I’m a little late in getting this note of gratitude out to you. I’m laying here on my couch reflecting on the workshop after a workout (see the kettlebells and mat in the background of the photo?). I don’t really need a weighted blanket, as you can see, because my dogs like to lie their...

not interested

I was recently talking to a client who wanted to raise her prices. She knew the mechanics and strategy of doing so. She knew she wanted to raise her 1:1 coaching price to $24,000. But she kept holding back. Why? Because she needed to expand her Money Capacity--her ability to hold, handle and receive that much money for her work. The issue wasn’t that she wasn’t worth it. She’s amazing at what she does and deserves to be paid at LEAST that amount. Instead, she needed to a) EMBODY the version of her that charges $24,000. And b) she needed...
